Q: Is this stuff supposed to be so hard? It hurts my hands and my 5 year old can’t use it

Ours was not hard and my 10 and 11 year old granddaughter was able to easily form things with it

Q: Will the clay expire? Will it harden when left unused?

Generally, no, but try to store it in a glass air-tight container that you don't plan on using for anything food related (just to be safe). Polymer clay can dry out if for example you use a paper towel or even plain writing paper to wrap it around in. You shouldn't try to wrap it in ANYTHING unless you want to risk that material absorbing the clay's vital synthetic moisture (which cannot be replaced with water) or for that material to potentially chemically fuse with it. Just a plain glass jar (airtight) or at least a metal tin that's air-tight enough should work fine. I'd also recommend purchasing the sculpey clay softener oil or anything that can work as an equivalent (universally) for polymer clays if it should get too tough or dry. Sculpey's is the only one i know of. But maybe simple Vaseline could work 🤷🏻♂️ (just speculating, not recommending that). Hope this helps.
